Tips for visiting a hospital in Japan
Bring identification and insurance documents
Have your passport and travel insurance policy ready. Hospitals will need to verify your identity and may contact your insurer directly.
Be prepared to pay upfront
Many hospitals and clinics in Japan require cash payment at the time of visit. Credit cards are not always accepted, especially at smaller clinics.
Ask about English-speaking staff
When calling to make an appointment, ask if there is staff who can speak your language. Some facilities have dedicated international patient departments.
Know the emergency numbers
Call 119 for an ambulance or fire emergency. Call 110 for police. Operators may have limited English, so speak slowly and clearly.
Look for JMIP / JIH certified hospitals
Hospitals certified under the Japan Medical Service Accreditation for International Patients (JMIP) or Japan International Hospitals (JIH) are better equipped to assist foreign patients.
